Not So Serious - Coffee Shop Poetry

It really just takes one's breath away, doesn't it?

The thoughtfully developed metaphor of the butterfly who is resting on a "hard rock" and no longer battling the buffeting winds in search of that rock which just might be soft enough to bring it happiness offers a well-deserved moment of personal reflection.

In combination with the double meaning of the twice-used word "lie," this short and honest poem poignantly points to the fact that we constantly lie to ourselves to find a fictitious happiness despite the lonely and despondent life we live merely because we are not willing to get off this "unsweetened stone" to battle the tempestuous wind that is the avenue to a better life.

Through this critical examination of the butterfly's self-defeating choice, the reader is forced to look within themselves and question whether they have become just another "butterfly" who is no longer flying and has become content with the "friendlessly and all alone" person they have become.

Furthermore, as should be expected from a writing with such great insight into human self-destruction and avoidance of adversity, the poem understands the ideas it forces individuals to accept will be a painful realization for those fortunate enough to come across it.

However, true to its aim, it makes no concessions or apologizes in this regard, stating "I do not care," letting the reader know that the poem had to be written, and it was - without remorse.
